Cut and Polish vs Paint Correction: What’s the Difference?

Encue Labs — Field Notes

“Cut and polish” and “paint correction” are often used as if they mean the same thing. They don’t — and the difference matters, especially on a car you care about.

What a cut and polish actually is

A traditional cut and polish is a single, relatively quick machine pass designed to lift surface dullness and improve shine. On lightly marked paint it can produce a noticeable improvement, and it has its place. But it is a cosmetic refresh — often achieved partly by filling defects rather than truly removing them. That is why swirls from a cheap cut and polish tend to reappear after a few washes: they were never gone, just temporarily hidden.

What paint correction actually is

Paint correction is the considered, measured version of the same idea. Rather than one pass, it is a staged process: the paint is assessed under proper lighting, then refined through successive cutting and polishing stages chosen for your specific paint and its condition. The goal is not to mask defects — it is to permanently remove them, restoring genuine depth, gloss and clarity to the clear coat itself.

A cut and polish improves how your paint looks today. A correction changes what your paint actually is.

Side by side

Approach: a cut and polish is a single quick pass; a correction is multi-stage, assessed panel by panel under LED light.

Result: a cut and polish gives improved shine that often fades as fillers wash away; a correction gives true defect removal that lasts.

Best for: a cut and polish suits light dullness on a budget; a correction suits a showroom finish, valuable cars, and any car being prepared for coating.

The coating connection

There is one more reason the difference matters. If you are planning a ceramic or graphene coating, the coating locks in whatever sits underneath it. Apply it over a quick cut and polish and you have sealed in the hidden imperfections. Apply it over a proper correction and you have sealed in a genuinely flawless finish — for years.
